In Our Words: A Collection of Stories from Local Military Veterans (Vol. I) Hardcover – January 16, 2026

U.S. military veterans have served our country, protecting the vital interests of our nation. The military stories associated with each veteran have the danger of being forgotten if simply left to the method of verbally passing down the stories to subsequent generations. Details may be lost, generational interest may wane, and of course everyone will eventually pass. Although all the details may not be conveyed, the codification of veterans’ experiences into a written form may serve to keep the names, and their associated stories, alive. This book is an effort to capture some of the stories from our local military veterans in northeast Kansas. During 2025, a total of 12 veterans were interviewed from across the U.S. Army, U.S Navy, and U.S. Air Force. The various anecdotes that make up a story have been transcribed so as to accurately reflect the personal spoken word of each veteran. Also embedded in this compilation are past and present pictures associated with the 12 veterans. These individuals have made an impact on society through their years of service. This endeavor is for the current and the future generations, to hear the experiences through the words of the veterans and to get a sense of “living in their shoes”… and to not lose some of their stories to time.
